Built between 1942 and 1945, these instruments come from one of the most fascinating periods in Gibson history. During World War II, with much of the regular workforce absent, guitars were often built by highly skilled women in Kalamazoo, using whatever materials were available at the time. This resulted in instruments that are lightweight, highly resonant, and uniquely individual. Today, Banner Gibsons are considered among the most collectible and best-sounding acoustics the company ever produced.

The famous headstock banner — “Only a Gibson is Good Enough” — has since become a defining mark of this era.

Offered here is a 1944 Gibson J-45 Banner, and a particularly desirable example.

Unlike many wartime guitars, this one features a working truss rod, a detail often absent due to wartime material restrictions — making this example even more special.

It features the classic and highly sought-after combination of a spruce top with mahogany back and sides, paired with a mahogany neck. The guitar remains all original, including its original finish and frets, and shows a few professionally glued cracks — honest signs of a life well lived.

The neck is everything you would expect from a Banner: huge, full, and substantial, contributing significantly to its tonal character and resonance.
