The 1961 Gibson GA-18T Explorer is a perfect example of that philosophy.

Powered by a pair of 6V6 power tubes, its original Jensen C10R speaker, and original output transformer, this little combo simply delivers. Clean tones have warmth and character, while turning the volume up rewards you with wonderfully organic breakup that arrives early enough to be enjoyed at home or in the studio. The overdrive is thick without becoming muddy, retaining plenty of articulation and an almost vocal quality. The tremolo is deep, musical, and extremely usable.

The amplifier has just been freshly serviced and is ready for many more years of use. The original hardwired tremolo footswitch was missing, so our technician installed a discreet jack, allowing the use of a modern footswitch without compromising the amplifier's originality any more than necessary. It is a practical solution that makes living with the amp considerably easier.

Cosmetically, it remains a wonderfully honest survivor. The original covering and handle are still present, while the Gibson logo is missing and there are a few paint marks on the grille cloth—small reminders of a life spent making music rather than sitting in storage.

One thing becomes obvious the moment you plug into it: this amp is simply fun. It reacts instantly to your picking, feels incredibly quick under the fingers, and encourages you to work the guitar's volume control rather than reaching for pedals. Pair it with a good vintage guitar and you're almost guaranteed to play longer than intended.
