Or perhaps more fitting — David Gilmour.

This guitar was assembled in the late 1970s by a devoted Pink Floyd fan chasing the ultimate “Black Strat” — inspired by Gilmour’s iconic instrument from the The Dark Side of the Moon era. In fact, Gilmour’s original “Black Strat” went on to sell for an astonishing $14.55 million at auction, underlining just how iconic this style of instrument has become.

The concept was simple: take a solid and reliable 1971 Stratocaster — including its original 4-bolt maple neck and hardware — and pair it with a 1963 body (dated) that simply had the feel and resonance. The result is a guitar that blends the best of both worlds.

Tonally, this Strat delivers exactly what you’d hope for. The bridge pickup has that cutting, expressive top end that demands attention, while the neck position is full, round, and unmistakably “big” — the kind of sound that fills a room and pulls listeners in instantly. Also every position between the two is ace. At just 3.19 kg, it’s also a lightweight and highly responsive instrument.

A previous owner decided to elevate the aesthetic, replacing an older automotive-style black finish with a proper vintage-correct refinish. The work was carried out by Mathias Schindehütte, who refinished the body in thin nitrocellulose black lacquer with light aging — a result that feels far more in line with the spirit of the instrument.

At the same time, the guitar received a professional refret using Dunlop 6105 fret wire, which remains in excellent condition and contributes to its superb playability.
