It’s always a pleasure to come across unmodified vintage guitars — even more so when they truly deliver tonally.

This lovely 1966 Gibson ES-335 in Sunburst is a perfect example. As an early ’66 model, it features the trapeze tailpiece, while still retaining the higher-positioned headstock diamond — a detail Gibson moved lower later that same year.

It is very likely that this guitar is equipped with the sought-after pre T-Top Humbuckers. As the two "Patent Number" sticker pickups remain untouched, this cannot be confirmed with absolute certainty — but most importantly, the guitar sounds excellent. Open, warm, and articulate, it delivers exactly what you’d hope for from a great mid-’60s ES.

The original wired ABR-1 bridge with nylon saddles is in good condition, the Double Line / Double Ring Kluson tuners operate flawlessly, and even the original yellow plush case has remained in very nice shape.

This is not an “under-the-bed” instrument — it has clearly been played. At some point, the cable was likely stepped on while plugged in, resulting in a small crack at the jack. It has not been repaired and, according to my technician, does not require any intervention. The original frets remain in good condition and are ready to serve for years to come.

Mid-to-late ’60s ES models are still relatively accessible — but move just a couple of years earlier, and you’re easily looking at €20k+ territory.

If you’re after a great-sounding, honest ES-335 with both character and upside potential, this one is well worth a closer look.
