Another lovely and original ’70s Strat has found its way to MVG.

I have a real soft spot for good early-’70s Fender Stratocasters. They offer all the feel, character, and tone that make a great Strat special, while still remaining relatively accessible compared to their older pre-CBS siblings.

Offered here is a 1974 Fender Stratocaster in 3-Tone Sunburst with a freshly refretted maple neck and a great set of staggered grey-bottom pickups. The neck, pots, and pickups all date to 1974. A few solder joints were touched over the years, and the guitar currently sports an old 5-way switch, while the original 3-way switch is included in the case.

The first thing that struck me when picking up this guitar was the neck. Compared to many examples from this period that passed here, it has a noticeably fuller shape with a bit more shoulder, making it incredibly comfortable and substantial in the hand without feeling cumbersome.

Plugged in, the guitar immediately impresses with how balanced it is. Output remains consistent across all pickup positions, making switching between them a genuine pleasure. Rather than the overly bright character some ’70s Strats can exhibit, this one sounds big, full, and remarkably stable throughout the entire register.

As mentioned, the guitar recently received a fresh refret using 6105 fret wire by Mathias Schindehütte. It retains its original nut and finish, and now plays effortlessly. For the collectors among you, the original frets have been kept and are included in the case.
