Few guitars have become as visually iconic. Whether in the hands of Jimmy Page, delivering Stairway to Heaven live, Alex Lifeson creating Rush's layered soundscapes, Slash, Don Felder, or countless arena rock legends, the EDS-1275 has always represented the ultimate statement piece. Yet beneath its unmistakable appearance lies a genuinely brilliant and surprisingly practical instrument.

Offered here is a 1974 Gibson EDS-1275 in Walnut, one of the coolest finishes Gibson offered during the Norlin era. Available only throughout the 1970s, Walnut gives the guitar a more understated, mature look than the traditional Cherry or Alpine White, while beautifully highlighting the natural grain of the mahogany.

This particular example is everything you hope for in a vintage double neck. Most importantly, it has no breaks, weighs only 5.03 kg, and is remarkably comfortable to play.

That last point often surprises people. The 12-string neck looks intimidating, but in reality it has a wonderfully comfortable profile that sits naturally in the hand. It never feels excessively wide or cumbersome, making long playing sessions far easier than one might expect. Combined with the well-balanced 6-string neck, the entire instrument feels surprisingly approachable.

Of course, one of the unique pleasures of an EDS-1275 is something no ordinary guitar can offer. Thanks to the independent controls for each neck, you can leave one neck ringing while immediately switching to the other, creating huge, orchestral textures impossible on a single-neck guitar. Whether moving between shimmering 12-string passages and powerful 6-string riffs or letting one neck sustain beneath the other, it is an inspiring instrument that constantly encourages creativity.

I bought this guitar from a wonderful gentleman in Germany, and it came with a story that perfectly suits an instrument like this. As a young man, he dreamed about owning this very guitar for years. It belonged to a friend, and every time he saw it, he promised himself that one day it would be his. After finishing his studies, finding his first proper job, and receiving his very first paycheck, he went straight to his friend's house, put the money on the table, and walked away with his dream guitar. It stayed with him ever since.

From an originality standpoint, the guitar remains wonderfully honest. At some point, a previous owner removed the pickup covers, inspired by Jimmy Page's famous EDS-1275. They have since been reinstalled, leaving only touched solder joints on the covers. The upper portion of the middle selector switch has been replaced, with the original broken part included in the case, and the solder joint there has naturally been disturbed. Two potentiometers have also been replaced, with the originals accompanying the guitar. The pickup set consists of two PAT No. sticker humbuckers with grey lead wires and two PAT No. stamped humbuckers with braided shield leads. Whether these are the exact four pickups the guitar left Kalamazoo with can no longer be determined, but they are all entirely correct for the period and work together beautifully.

This guitar has an authority that only a great vintage Gibson seems to possess. The 6-string neck delivers everything from warm, vocal cleans to thick, articulate overdrive, while the 12-string is rich, chimey, and wonderfully balanced without ever becoming harsh. Together, they create the enormous, unmistakable sound that has made the EDS-1275 one of the most celebrated stage guitars in rock history. Finding a clean, structurally healthy vintage EDS-1275 is becoming increasingly difficult. Finding one with no breaks, excellent playability, such fantastic weight, and this much character is rarer still.
