The Collectors Choice series produced some truly outstanding guitars, and among enthusiasts, few models enjoy the reputation of the CC#8 "The Beast."
Based on Bernie Marsden's famous 1959 Les Paul Standard, serial number 9-1914, "The Beast" was one of the highlights of the entire Collectors Choice program. Limited to just 300 instruments, it remains one of the most sought-after modern Gibson Custom Shop releases.
This 2013 example, serial number 035, showcases exactly why.
The first thing that stands out is how convincing the aging looks. The checking, wear, and overall patina were executed with great restraint and taste, giving the guitar the appearance of a well-played Burst without feeling overdone. Combined with the beautiful flame top, it is a very attractive Les Paul.
Fortunately, it is not just about appearances.
Like the best examples of this model, this guitar is exceptionally balanced and musical. It has warmth, clarity, and that wonderful woody character one hopes to find in a great Les Paul. Clean tones are open and articulate, while overdriven sounds retain definition and richness. Whether you are after blues, classic rock, or simply a fantastic all-around Les Paul, this guitar delivers.
A previous owner upgraded the electronics with calibrated potentiometers and Jupiter Vitamin Q capacitors. The result is a highly responsive control set and excellent tonal clarity throughout the sweep of the controls. Combined with an already strong acoustic foundation, the guitar simply sounds excellent.
Collectors Choice guitars have gained a lot of recognition over the years, and "The Beast" remains one of the standout models of the run. This example combines great looks, excellent tone, and thanks to the electronics upgrade, is particularly appealing to players both sound- and price-wise.
Comes with its original case, certificate, and the additional control cavity cover.
